Passion - Unexpected Legacy

When you are passionate about something, it is obvious to everyone! A light in you shines when you are involved in something that you have a passion for. In fact, just last week I realized how profoundly others can be affected by our passions. Last week I found my grandma on a golf course. A few years ago that would have been perfectly normal. She grew up on a golf course and through her entire life it was her passion. She was confident and at home on the course. However, last week was different.

My Grandmother has been suffering from alzheimer's for the last 4 years. We have watched her memories and personality slowly slip away, as we stand by waiting for those brief moments when we see a sparkle in her eye or the way she says something, to let us know that a little bit of the woman we know is still in there. It is heart breaking to watch someone you love crumble in this way. After a visit this summer I kissed her good bye and she smiled even though she no longer knew who I was. My heart sank as I knew that the strong, confident, stylish, spunky woman that I had grown up with was no longer there.

I only golf about once or twice a year, so I am not the golfer that my grandma was. Last week was the second time I have golfed this year so I was not expecting high performance. However, When I stepped out to tee up on the second hole something wonderful happened. I looked down at the ball to get ready to swing and there she was. Her voice telling me how to hold the club, where my feet should go, take the club all the way back on the back swing, and follow through. I just closed my eyes for a moment and let the grandma reel play through my head and then I took the shot. It sailed right down the middle of the fairway and I could just picture her smile. The rest of the game went very much the same way and it is probably the best I have played in quite a while.

The score has never mattered to me on the course, the true gift of the day was that I found my grandma. The woman I knew and loved will forever live in me and when I need to find her, it will be time to play 9 holes!

Share your passion with those you love. Connect with them and spend time doing the things you love to do, because one day that will be your legacy.

The journey is the destination!
